Glossary of Central Vacuum System Terms
Canister
The container that holds the dirt and debris collected by the vacuum system.
Power Unit
The central component of the system, which houses the motor, fan, and other essential parts that drive the central vacuum.
Quiet Operation
A feature available in some central vacuum systems designed to minimize noise levels during use, enhancing the cleaning experience.
Air Watt
A measurement that evaluates both airflow (measured in cubic feet per minute, CFM, or cubic meters per hour, CMH) and water lift (measured in inches of mercury or H2O). This metric provides a comprehensive assessment of the system’s cleaning power and its ability to effectively remove dirt, debris, and allergens from a space.
Suction Power
Also referred to as water lift capacity, this measures the strength and suction capability of the motor, typically expressed in inches of water lift. It indicates the vacuum’s ability to lift water through a hose or wand, with a higher water lift rating generally signifying more powerful suction that can handle heavier debris and liquids.
